Territorial aggression

Protecting territory is a natural canine instinct. In the wild, dogs mark their territory and defend it if other dogs get close.

Dogs will bark to intimidate intruders entering their territory and to alert other pack members so they can join in the defence. If the intruder does not back off, there may be aggressive posturing and lunging. Finally, if the intruder is still undeterred, the dog might attack them.

As a dog matures, they tend to become more stand-offish towards people approaching their territory and more likely to bark at strangers. The territory generally includes the house or property plus bordering areas such as the footpath and the family’s vehicles.

First, I would advise that you get your dog thoroughly checked by your veterinarian to rule out any medical causes for aggression. However, when dogs show aggression to strangers on their home property but not on neutral territory, territorial aggression is a likely diagnosis.
